Slug generator
Type a title and get a clean URL slug instantly — accents transliterated, symbols dropped, your choice of separator, one line or a whole list at a time.
Start typing above — the slug appears here as you type.
From title to slug
The generator applies the same normalization pipeline most web frameworks use, one step at a time:
- Transliterate — accented and decorated characters are decomposed and reduced to plain ASCII letters, so séance becomes seance instead of s-ance.
- Strip symbols — punctuation, quotes, emoji, and anything else that isn't a letter or digit is removed.
- Collapse separators — runs of spaces and symbols become a single hyphen (or underscore), and leading or trailing separators are trimmed.
- Lowercase — URLs are case-sensitive on most servers, so /My-Post and /my-post can be two different pages. Lowercasing everything avoids accidental duplicates.
What makes a good slug
- Keep it readable: the slug shows up in search results, browser bars, and shared links — a human should be able to guess the page's topic from it.
- Put the important words first and cut filler: how-to-brew-coffee beats a-complete-guide-on-how-you-can-brew-coffee.
- Avoid dates and years unless the content is truly time-bound — best-laptops-2024 looks stale in 2026 even after you update the page.
- Once a page is published, treat its slug as permanent. If you must change it, set a 301 redirect from the old URL so links and rankings carry over.
Frequently asked questions
What is a URL slug?
The slug is the last part of a URL that identifies one page — in example.com/blog/my-first-post, the slug is my-first-post. A good slug is short, lowercase, uses hyphens between words, and describes what the page is about.
Should I use hyphens or underscores in slugs?
Hyphens. Google treats a hyphen as a word separator but joins words around an underscore, so my-first-post is read as three words while my_first_post can be read as one. Use underscores only when a system you don't control requires them.
How does the generator handle accents and special characters?
Accented letters are transliterated to their plain ASCII equivalent (café becomes cafe, über becomes uber), and symbols like ?, !, & and quotes are removed. Whatever you paste, the result contains only letters, digits, and your chosen separator.
Can I generate slugs in bulk?
Yes — paste multiple lines and you get one slug per line, each with its own copy button plus a copy-all button for the whole list. Handy for turning a spreadsheet column of titles into URLs.
Is there an ideal slug length for SEO?
Shorter is generally better — three to five meaningful words is a common target. Drop filler words like a, the, and of when they don't change the meaning. The optional max length setting trims the slug cleanly at a separator boundary.
Is my text sent anywhere?
No. Everything runs in your browser with plain JavaScript — nothing you type is uploaded, logged, or stored.
