Online Markdown editor
Write on the left, see it rendered on the right — toolbar and shortcuts, autosave in your browser, and one-click export to .md, HTML, PDF, or Word.
A free online Markdown editor with live preview
Write Markdown on the left and watch it render on the right as you type — the same GitHub-flavored Markdown you use in READMEs, issues, docs, and notes apps. No account, no install, and no upload: the editor, the preview, and every export run in your browser.
- Formatting toolbar and shortcuts — bold, italic, headings, links, images, code, quotes, lists, checkboxes, and tables, with the keyboard shortcuts you already know from docs apps.
- Smart lists — Enter continues a bulleted, numbered, or task list; Tab nests an item; Enter on an empty item ends the list.
- Autosave — every change is saved in this browser, so closing the tab or a crash never loses your draft.
- Live stats — words, characters, lines, and reading time, plus a word count for the current selection.
- Split, write, or preview — side by side on desktop, a write/preview toggle on phones, and a distraction-free full-screen mode.
- Themes — preview (and export) in GitHub, clean sans, classic serif, or academic paper style.
A Markdown viewer for any .md file
Got a README, changelog, or notes file you just want to read? Drop the .md file onto the editor (or click "Open") and switch to Preview — tables, code blocks, task lists, and links render exactly as they would on GitHub. The file is read locally; it isn't uploaded anywhere, which makes this Markdown viewer safe for private documents.
An online Markdown editor with PDF export
When the document is done, the export menu turns it into whatever you need:
- PDF— printed by your browser's own engine, so the text stays selectable and links stay clickable. For page size, margins, a title page, or a table of contents, open the document in the Markdown to PDF converter.
- Word (.docx) — real Word headings, lists, and tables you can keep editing, the same engine as the Markdown to Word converter.
- HTML — a standalone, styled page that opens anywhere, or the HTML fragment copied to your clipboard (see also Markdown to HTML).
- .md— the plain Markdown file, named after your document's first heading (⌘/Ctrl + S).
Markdown formatter: tidy tables and lists in one click
Hand-written Markdown tables drift out of alignment, lists mix * and -, and pasted text brings trailing spaces and piles of blank lines. The Tidy button formats the whole document without changing how it renders — table columns are padded into a clean grid (wide characters like CJK and emoji included):
| name | role | since | |:--|:-:|--:| | ada | engineer | 2024 |
becomes
| name | role | since | | :--- | :------: | ----: | | ada | engineer | 2024 |
It's one undo step, so ⌘/Ctrl + Z puts everything back.
Markdown cheat sheet
Everything you need to write Markdown, with the exact syntax to copy. Open the Cheat sheet panel in the editor toolbar to insert any of these at your cursor.
Headings
# Heading 1 ## Heading 2 ### Heading 3
Put a space after the # — #title without one is plain text on GitHub.
Bold, italic, and strikethrough
**bold** _italic_ ***bold italic*** ~~strikethrough~~
Markdown new line and line breaks
Markdown joins consecutive lines into one paragraph. To break a line without starting a new paragraph, end it with two spaces or a backslash, or use <br>. A blank line starts a new paragraph.
Roses are red·· violets are blue\ Markdown is neat<br> and so are you (·· = two spaces)
Markdown quote (blockquote)
> The best tool is often the one only your team needs. > > > A nested quote
Markdown numbered list
1. First 2. Second 1. Nested (indent three spaces) 3. Third
The numbers don't need to be right — 1. on every line still renders 1, 2, 3. Start with another number (e.g. 5.) to continue a list from there. Bulleted lists use -, *, or +.
Markdown checkbox (task list)
- [x] Write the spec - [ ] Ship it - [ ] Tell the team
On GitHub, checkboxes in issues and pull requests can be ticked right in the rendered view.
Markdown table syntax: how to make a table in Markdown
| Feature | Free | Pro | | --------- | ---- | ---- | | Editor | Yes | Yes | | Export | Yes | Yes |
Three rules: a header row, a separator row with at least three dashes per column, and pipes between cells. The outer pipes are optional and the columns don't have to line up — but aligned tables are much easier to read, which is what "Tidy" does. To put a literal pipe in a cell, escape it as \|. Got a spreadsheet? The CSV to Markdown table converter writes the table for you.
Markdown table format and alignment
| Left | Center | Right | | :----- | :----: | ----: | | a | b | c |
A colon on the left of the dashes aligns left, on both sides centers, on the right aligns right — handy for numbers.
Markdown underline
<u>Underlined text</u>
There's no Markdown syntax for underline (underscores mean italic), so use the HTML tag. <ins> works too.
How to center text in Markdown
<p align="center">Centered text</p> <div align="center"> <img src="https://example.com/logo.png" width="120"> </div>
Markdown has no alignment, so centering needs HTML. GitHub keeps the align attribute but strips style, which is why READMEs use align="center".
Links, images, and code
[Link text](https://example.com)

Inline `code` and a fenced block:
```js
console.log("hello");
```Keyboard shortcuts
| Bold | ⌘/Ctrl + B |

| Image | ⌘/Ctrl + Shift + I |
| Heading 1–6 | ⌘/Ctrl + Alt + 1…6 |
| Numbered / bulleted / task list | ⌘/Ctrl + Shift + 7 / 8 / 9 |
| Quote | ⌘/Ctrl + Shift + . |
| Code block | ⌘/Ctrl + Alt + C |
| Indent / outdent list item | Tab / Shift + Tab |

Split view vs a WYSIWYG Markdown editor
WYSIWYG Markdown editors hide the syntax and show only formatted text. That's friendly, but they rewrite your Markdown on save — list markers change, tables get reflowed, HTML you typed disappears. A split-view editor like this one keeps the source exactly as you wrote it and still shows the formatted result live, so what you commit to a repo or paste into a CMS is predictable. The toolbar covers the WYSIWYG-style convenience: select text and click, no syntax to remember.
Frequently asked questions
Is this online Markdown editor free?
Yes — free, no signup, no ads in the editor, and no limits on document length. It runs entirely in your browser, so there's no server doing the work and nothing to pay for.
Where is my document saved?
In your browser's local storage, automatically, about half a second after you stop typing — the "Saved" indicator shows when. Nothing is uploaded. Local storage is per browser and per device, so download a .md file (⌘/Ctrl + S) to keep a copy or move it elsewhere. Private windows may not keep it after you close them.
How do I make a checkbox in Markdown?
Start a list item with a dash, a space, and brackets: - [ ] for an empty checkbox and - [x] for a checked one. This is GitHub-flavored Markdown's task list syntax, supported by GitHub, GitLab, Obsidian, and this editor (toolbar button "[x]" or ⌘/Ctrl + Shift + 9).
How do I add a new line in Markdown?
A single line break in the source is ignored — the lines join into one paragraph. To force a new line, end the line with two spaces, a backslash (\), or an HTML <br> tag. To start a new paragraph, leave a blank line. Tick "Single line breaks" under the editor to preview it GitHub-comment style, where every newline counts.
How do I make a table in Markdown?
Write a header row with cells separated by pipes (| name | role |), then a separator row of dashes (| --- | --- |), then one row per line. Colons in the separator set alignment: :--- left, :---: center, ---: right. The "Table" button inserts a ready-made table, and "Tidy" lines the columns up for you.
How do I underline text in Markdown?
Markdown has no underline syntax — _underscores_ make italics. Use the HTML tag instead: <u>underlined text</u>. It works on GitHub, in most Markdown editors, and here.
How do I center text in Markdown?
Plain Markdown can't center text. Wrap it in HTML: <p align="center">centered text</p> or <div align="center">…</div>. The align attribute survives on GitHub, where style attributes are stripped.
How do I quote in Markdown?
Start the line with > and a space. Keep adding > to every line of a multi-line quote, use a line with just > for a paragraph break inside it, and >> to nest a quote inside a quote.
How do I make a numbered list in Markdown?
Start each line with a number, a period, and a space: 1. first, 2. second. Markdown numbers the list from the first number, so you can write 1. on every line and it still counts up. Indent by two or three spaces to nest a list inside an item.
Can I use it as a Markdown viewer to open .md files?
Yes. Click "Open" or drag a .md, .markdown, or .txt file onto the editor and it renders instantly — switch to "Preview" for a full-width, read-only view. The file never leaves your computer.
Can I export Markdown to PDF or Word?
Yes. The export menu saves a PDF (through your browser's print dialog — choose "Save as PDF"), a Word .docx with real headings and lists, a standalone styled HTML page, or the raw .md file. You can also copy the rendered HTML to paste into a CMS or email.
Is this a WYSIWYG Markdown editor?
It's a split-view editor: you write Markdown on the left and see the formatted result live on the right, with a toolbar and shortcuts so you rarely type syntax by hand. Unlike a pure WYSIWYG editor, your Markdown stays exactly as you wrote it — no hidden reformatting.
What does the Markdown formatter ("Tidy") change?
Only things that don't change the rendered output: it aligns table columns, turns * and + bullets into -, trims trailing spaces (keeping deliberate two-space line breaks), collapses runs of blank lines, and adds blank lines around headings. Code blocks and front matter are never touched, and ⌘/Ctrl + Z undoes it.
